Hi, our kitchen has been in for a year and I’ve already had it painted twice! I haven’t had a backsplash in yet, overwhelmed by the thought of getting it right. The wall behind the hob is painted in FE Oak Apple. I’ve seen beautiful tiles but have long wanted easy to maintain glass complicated by recent suggestions of antique mirror glass. Is toughened antique mirror glass a good option? I have a couple of samples and like them. Antiqued mirror has been on trend for a few years but cant see it dating but may be wrong!
Toughened glass is quite a bit dearer than non, I’m not sure that technically it has to be toughened if it’s behind an induction hob just gas, aga due to the type of heat source but you may wish to check with a supplier. I’m having one installed at some point behind my aga however tbh I’m not sure I would in your kitchen as you will see the back of the appliances etc which you may wish to consider?
I’ve got a fan thing on top of my aga and will have to strategically place something behind it! Templating is also quite tricky with cut outs for plug sockets and it’s quite expensive for them to come out and measure as there are so few suppliers. If you did opt for tiles you could use an epoxy resin grout, it’s non-porous so more or less stainproof. Hi Minnie Thank you very much – I’ve been browsing tiles for a while now but didn’t know about the epoxy resin grout. I’m still mixed up as its kate but it’s either antiqued mirror or tiles now.

In fact, by placing one of these dressing table mirrors on top of a table or chest, you effectively create a dressing table from another piece of furniture.
The History, Styles and Caring for Antique Mirrors.
A mirror is a smooth or polished surface that returns an image by reflection. Technically, a mirror or reflector is an object such that each narrow beam of light that incides on its surface bounces is reflected in a single direction. This property, called specular reflection , distinguishes a mirror from objects that scatter light in many directions such as flat-white paint , let it pass through them such as a lens or prism , or absorb it.
Most mirrors behave as such only for certain ranges of wavelength, direction, and polarization of the incident light; most commonly for visible light , but also for other regions of the electromagnetic spectrum from X-rays to radio waves. A mirror will generally reflect only a fraction of the incident light; even the best mirrors may scatter, absorb, or transmit a small portion of it.
Antique mirrors and lamps, genuine and old. Decorative for the home decorator or for interior designer. French gilt mirrors and French iron framed mirrors.
Centuries ago, the Romans and Greeks used polished metal disks to see their reflection. By the s, mirrors were made by coating a piece of glass with metallic silver and were considered important decorative pieces. Frames could be ornately carved in wood or made of ivory, silver, or tortoiseshell. Knowing the age of a mirror will help determine its value and whether it is a genuine antique.
Use a magnifying tool to carefully examine all around the frame. Look for a production date on the frame, on the back or in the corner. It may have the name of the manufacturer; if you can identify the manufacturer, you can research when that particular mirror was made. Frames with engraving or embedded sketching, or that are ornately embellished, are more indicative of older age.
Examine the back of the mirror for any identifying information about the production date or manufacturer. Most valuable mirrors date to or earlier, but a very elaborate design, even from , is still more valuable than less ornate designs. Carefully remove the mirror from the frame and examine the surface of the glass closely. Genuine silver backing will usually feature light spots and clear areas.
