8chan is struggling to stay online after El Paso massacre
The imageboard 8chan is now known as the website where mass killers in New Zealand and El Paso shared their racist ideologies, but it didn’t start that way. It began as a haven for free speech — or at least that’s what its founder believed it to be. Fredrick Brennan created 8chan in , when he was It was a lot like 4chan, another imageboard created by another teenager 10 years earlier, but it allowed users even more freedom. The original premise for both was simple: Users could upload photos while others commented with text or images of their own. Everyone was anonymous.

The news that 8chan, the far-right online community allegedly home to mass shooting manifestos, has been effectively removed from the internet is cause for celebration, but should also make us pause and consider the implications. In March, an account believed to belong to the gunman behind the Christchurch mass shooting posted an page manifesto to the site.

The far-right internet forum 8chan, which has been linked to mass shootings in the US, has lost its cybersecurity protection after its provider cut off support. In a blog post in the wake of the two shootings in El Paso, Texas and Dayton, Ohio, Cloudflare chief executive Matthew Prince said the company could no longer offer web-based support and cybersecurity protection to the site.
Mr Prince claimed the suspect in the El Paso attack had posted to 8chan before commencing the attack.

It was met with uncensored praise and adulation from other users who called the massacre a “response to the Hispanic invasion of Texas”.
If confirmed, it would make the shooting the third this year where the attacker had links to 8chan. The site went down briefly on Monday after security provider Cloudflare said it would stop supporting the site. Without Cloudflare’s protection the site became vulnerable to outside hackers who shut it down.

The bottom-feeding forum 8chan, which grew popular by embracing fringe hateful internet cultures, is having trouble staying online. Brennan started the online message board as a free speech utopia. But now, 8chan is known as something else: a megaphone for mass shooters.

TORONTO — Jim Watkins, the owner of embattled forum website 8chan, took to YouTube on Thursday to issue a call-to-action for his site users to remain united and rant about modern American society, as he attempts to bring 8chan back online under a different name. Meanwhile, Fredrick Brennan, who created 8chan in , appears to be in an active campaign on Twitter to deny 8chan from relaunching.
Brennan created 8chan in but is no longer affiliated with the site, and has told several media outlets he regrets creating it. It is preparing to launch again under a new name — 8kun. Social media activist group Sleeping Giants tweeted out a challenge Wednesday to Canadian tech company Tucows , the supposed registrar for 8kun. Tucows has not responded to CTV News.
Subsequent attempts by 8chan to get back online were thwarted as other companies repeatedly dropped them as a customer, citing the websites propensity to host hate speech and violent, misogynistic content. I love watching Q cultist heads explode when I tell them I don’t need a reason to try to take 8kun down. I can want it down just because I don’t like its owner and don’t think he should run an imageboard. If you think that reason is invalid, too bad so sad, it’s personal baby.
There is no reason why 8chan wouldn’t be under the same scrutiny just because they changed their name. Our concerns with 8chan and its threat to spreading violent extremism, regardless of rebranding, remains the same.

Controversial imageboard 8chan has been revived under a new name, 8kun — with the front page of the site now bearing a warning that “Any content that violates the laws of the United States of America will be deleted and the poster will be banned. Launched in by Fredrick Brennan as an alternative to 4chan, 8chan had been linked to harassment campaigns, racism, misogyny, neo-Nazism, pedophilia and mass shootings.
It was also a hub for believers of far-right conspiracy theory QAnon , which claims that a secret cabal of “Satan-worshiping pedophiles” rules the world and that only Donald Trump can stop them. The founder has since expressed a desire that the imageboard be shut down. Indeed, 8chan was taken off the publicly accessible internet in August, after the alleged Christchurch, Poway, and El Paso shooters used the site to spread their manifesto or livestream.
Several companies pulled their support or services from 8chan in the aftermath, including web security company Cloudflare and domain registrar Tucows.

Fredrick Brennan is a vivid dreamer, and toward the end of his time running the notorious website 8chan, one sequence would play out in his mind night after night as he slept. Brennan, wheelchair-bound from a genetic disorder, dreamed that he was being hauled away by police and locked behind bars while dressed in an orange jumpsuit. Brennan was born with osteogenesis imperfecta, more commonly referred to as brittle bone disease.
His arms and legs are severely bowed from the condition, which, he says, also afflicts his mother and younger brother. He has, by his own tally, suffered dozens of broken bones over his life. Many of the photos of Brennan found online are screenshots pulled from a documentary made about him, a portion of which was filmed when he was 19 at his then-home while he was dressed in bright blue and red Super Mario pajamas.
A lava lamp and a stuffed Mario mushroom in the background, he appears considerably younger, barely a teenager. A pair of glasses sit slightly crooked on his face.

This week, Cloudflare announced that it would no longer help to host 8Chan. Cloudflare is an infrastructure provider: it helps speed up websites and protects them from malicious attacks. This decision is notable because infrastructure providers have not historically been publicly visible in policing hate speech. Cloudflare and others made headlines in when it and several other companies revoked their services for The Daily Stormer, a neo-Nazi forum that played a large role in supporting the murder of Heather Heyer in Charlottesville.

BOSTON – The owner of the online message board 8chan says he’s headed shortly to the United States, where lawmakers want to question him on his site’s use as a megaphone by violent white supremacists. Jim Watkins, who lives in the Philippines, did not specifically say he would testify, but he tweeted portions of an email he said he had sent Tuesday to House Homeland Security Committee leaders expressing willingness to speak by phone.
The committee wants him to testify on what he has done to prevent the site from being used by extremists. Gunmen who committed similar massacres earlier this year at two New Zealand mosques and a Poway, California, synagogue also posted there. In a video he released on Tuesday, Watkins said 8chan was fully co-operating with law enforcement. He also said that the El Paso shooter had first posted his hate-filled manifesto to Instagram and that someone else had re-posted it to 8chan.
The manifesto, a PDF file containing the shooter’s name, was posted to 8chan before first reports of the massacre – and before his name was publicly known. The shooter surrendered to police after the killings. Facebook, which owns Instagram, said the company found nothing that supported Watkins’ claim. The company also said it disabled the Instagram account associated with the shooter on Saturday, adding that the account had not been active in more than a year.
Its administrator tweeted Tuesday that he was moving the site onto the darknet, an online corner of the internet hidden from normal browsing where illicit drugs are sold and criminals trade stolen credit card data.
